DM Office is pleased to present, For Bacchus, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist, Christian Santiago, on view from December 3rd through January 2nd, 2021 at 169 Canal Street.
…beautiful boys came and went from the squat as did a strange vapor. Through defaced wooden boards (meant to obstruct prying eyes), I was able to make out something I couldn't have possibly seen. Inside, through the vapor and flashing strobe, I saw the beautiful boys bubbling and churning into unidentifiable slabs of meat. Rearranging into something new. I was hard. After weeks of watching, I found myself amongst the strange collective. I watched as a boy licked his fingers sheathed in a slick PVC glove and rubbed it onto a strange, puckered opening at the center of the wall. It responded to the greeting and slowly bloomed allowing the full lengths of digits to enter. Then, from it, tendrils pushed their way out into our world. The worshipping youths let the weight of the squirming organs hang heavy in their hands. They had summoned the demonic thing into our midst many times before. From the mass of pulsating and shifting matter leaked a warm substance. I was offered and I fed. It was thick and stringy on my lips, God's milk. I chased it down with Dragonberry Gatorade. I felt every inch of my being expanding. Nothing made sense. All one could do was drop backward and let heavy clouds seal them away. I allowed the demonic thing to wrap its folds of meat around my body. Suckling on my limbs with newly formed orifices. The bruises on my body would last for weeks…
Christian Santiago (b. 1990 Bronx, NY) studied illustration at Parsons. Through his intricate line work, he conjures fleshy figures and alien corporealities that comingle in perpetual becoming. Pulsatile and cinematic, each frame functions as a proto-narrative and/or character study for a larger undertaking that will unfold in published form. Combined, these works also congeal into an idiosyncratic and highly personal mythology that resonates with a broad pantheon of inspirations and references, from the writings of Clive Barker to the tortured bodies of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki as well as 19 th century Japanese ‘monster’ scrolls. Santiago currently lives and works in New York City.
